November 30th

Happy last day of November!  I can't believe it's already December tomorrow!  Here's what we did today:

Math-We quickly went over multiplying when there are numerous zeroes in one of the factors and then did lots and lots of multiplication problems!  We used our Active Expressions to type in the answers and see how we did!

Word Study-We will be starting new spelling groups tomorrow.  I have just re-assessed the students to see which spelling principles they have mastered and to adjust the groups as needed.

Reading-We looked at the same article from yesterday and found that it was much easier to understand when looking at the different text features.

Writing-Students drafted the first paragraph of their persuasive letters.  In the first paragraph we include an attention grabber, the opinion statement, three persuasive reasons and a closing sentence.  Tomorrow the students will work on the their three supporting paragraphs.  Each paragraph will focus on one of their three persuasive reasons.  We will end with a closing paragraph later this week.

We also went over the Reading Tungsten this afternoon and will be taking December's next week.

Homework:
Math-WS 10.5, odds and all MR

Don't forget to read, write and bring in a water bottle half filled with vegetable oil for Science.

Adopt a Family ends Friday!

Have a great night!

November 29th

I hope everyone had a nice, relaxing Thanksgiving!  We have only three weeks till Winter Break so we'll be working hard!

Here's what we did today:
Math-We learned 3 and 4 by 1 digit multiplication.  Students are doing very well with this!  There will be a Chapter 10 test on Thursday.

Reading-We listened to an article which discussed the NBA and WNBA, but students did not get to see the article.  Tomorrow they will have a chance to see the article and will see how text features can really help make sense of expository text.

Writing-We wrote our opinion statements that will start our persuasive letter.

Homework:
Math-WS 10.4, all problems

Reading-Read 100 minutes this week.

Writing-Write 3 entries in your Writer's Notebook.

*We will be going to the bookstore this Thursday and Friday.

November 23rd

Here's what we did on the last day of our short week:
Math-We learned how to multiply 2 by 1 digit numbers.  Students caught on quickly!

Reading-We added some more expository text features to our class list such as bolded words, graphs, and the index.  Then, in pairs, students looked through an expository text for some examples and then shared with a group.

Writing-We continued with persuasive writing by discussing the important opinion statement.  We'll be ready to start drafting next week.

We also met with our buddies today for a Thanksgiving Bingo game!

Homework:
Math-WS 10.3--Complete everything, except the middle section (where a factor is missing).

Read and write as much as possible!

I hope everyone has a relaxing and peaceful Thanksgiving!  Enjoy the break!

November 22nd

Here's what we did:
Math-We estimated a factor in a two by one digit multiplication problem and then solved for the estimated answer.  Tomorrow we will begin solving two by one digit problems.

Word Study-I gave the students the same assessment (25 words) that I did at the beginning of the year to put them into their Spelling groups.  This will allow me to see how they have progressed and adjust the groups as needed.

Social Studies-Students took the Chapter 3 test today.  I will hand these back tomorrow.  We also shared all the dioramas that were brought in.  I'm very impressed by the creativity!

Science-Students went to Science today and will continue to see Mr. Phillips for the remainder of the quarter.

Homework:
Math-WS 10.2, all problems

Science-Bring in an empty water bottle, half filled with vegetable oil by December 1st.

I am not requiring 100 reading minutes or three Writer's Notebook entries this week; however, I don't want to discourage anyone from not reading or writing.  Students should continue to read and write as much as they'd like!

Tomorrow is Cleaning Products Day for Adopt a Family.  Please continue to send in food items as well.  Thanks for your support!

Have a great night!

November 19th

Sorry I did not post the past two days; due to meetings on Early Release day and a technology training yesteray afternoon, I did not have a chance.  But I hope the week has gone well for everyone!

I was actually out this morning for a literacy meeting, but here's what the kids did today:
Math-They went over lesson 10.1 on multiplication patterns.  All homework was actually completed in class.  It is really important that students remember to make sure the number of zeroes in the factors and the product are equal.  If the basic fact has a zero in it, however, the product will have an extra zero.  Here is an example: 5x700=3500, 5x600=3000.

Word Study-Students created drawings of a prepositional phrase they wrote.  These will be displayed outside our classroom so come and take a look!

Reading-All Reading groups met today.

Writing-We continued our persuasive letters by choosing a topic and three convincing reasons to support that topic.

Social Studies-We reviewed for the Chapter 3 test which is on Monday.

Homework:
Word Study-Finish prepositional drawings if needed.

Social Studies-Study Chapter 3.  Packet is also due Monday, as well as the optional extra credit.

Read and Write!

Please remember to bring in items for Adopt a Family!  Have a great weekend and don't forget that there is no school next Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday!

November 16th

Here's what we did today:
Math-Students took the Chapter 9 test and will get them back tomorrow.  We will be starting on larger multiplication problems later this week so if students are a little rusty on their facts, they should be reviewing nightly.

Word Study-We learned about prepositional phrases.  Here is a link to the words to a song that contains a lot of common prepositions.  http://www.misscantillon.com/Preposition%20Song.htm  Any student who can memorize this song by Friday will get a special prize!

Reading-We are learning about different features of expository writing and started by reading part of a book about T-Rex.  We noticed the captions in the book to help give information about the pictures.  Ask your child what expository writing is!

Writing-We looked at some examples of persuasive writing from last year and brainstormed some topics for a persuasive letter.  We learned what makes up a good persuasive letter and that it is very important to choose a topic that you are passionate about.

Health-We learned about the respiratory system by watching a short video and by seeing how many times we breath in a minute, hour and day!  Almost 25, 000 times in a day!

Homework:
Grammar-Page 13 in workbook needs to be completed on a separate sheet of paper.  Write down each prepositional phrase from the passage and underline the preposition in the phrase.

Reading-Groups will meet tomorrow.

Social Studies-Complete assignment from yesterday's class.

Other Info.
*Tomorrow is Early Release.  Please send a note if your child is going home a different way than normal.

*A book order was sent home.  Please return by Friday.

*Tomorrow is Crazy Sock/Shoe Day.  Please bring money for Adopt a Family if you are participating.

Have a great night!

November 15th

I hope everyone had a great weekend!  Here's what we did today:
Math: We reviewed for the Chapter 9 test which is tomorrow.

Word Study-We reviewed personal and possessive pronouns.

Reading-Students took the November Reading Tungsten.

Writing-We shared some more personal narratives and will begin persuasive writing tomorrow.

Social Studies-We talked about the Adena, Hopewell, and Mississipppian groups.  An important concept in this chapter is understanding when each of these groups was around.  The Adena were around in 1000 B.C., the Hopewell in 200 B.C. and the Mississippian in 700 A.D.  It is important for students to understand that even though we are learning about these groups in the same chapter, they were not around at the same time.

Homework:
Math-Study for the Chapter 9 test.

Social Studies-Page 135, #1, 3, 4--Use RAP-Restate the Question, Answer the Question, Prove your Answer

November 3rd

I hope everyone had a nice, relaxing four day weekend!  It's already Wednesday of this short week and we have a lot to accomplish.  Here's what we did today:

Math-We reviewed for the Chapter 8 test which is tomorrow.  The test focuses on basic multiplication facts, multiplication properties and also stresses WORD PROBLEMS.  They should be able to identify what operation to use to solve a word problem and solve it.

Word Study-I met with Groups 1 and 2 today to give them their word lists.  Group 1 is working on words with the -ing ending preceded by either VCe or VVC.  Group 2 is working on words with the comparative suffixes (er, est, ier, iest).

Reading-We re-read In My Backyard and pulled out the main ideas.  Tomorrow we will turn these ideas into a summary.  The students also met in their reading groups and will meet again Friday.

Writing-We continued publishing our personal narratives and working on our choice piece.

Social Studies-We began Chapter 2 by focusing on Missouri's diverse culture.  The students met in groups to research online about a cultural festival in Missouri.  We will share what we learned tomorrow.  Students were also given a packet containing information on Chapter 2 as well as the worksheets for the chapter and two extra credit options.  The worksheets and optional extra credit are both due the day of the test (Thursday, November 11th).

Homework:
Math-Study for the Chapter 8 test.  Extra worksheets were given out.  These are great practice, but do not need to be handed in.

Writing-Some students are choosing to type their narratives at home and save it on flash drive.  This is fine, but is not required.  They will also have time in school to publish this piece.

Remember to write in your Writer's Notebook this week!  It is already Wednesday!

Have a great night!

Blog Post
In Social Studies we discussed our ethnic backgrounds.  I thought it would be interesting for the students to post any information they have on their backgrounds and where their ancestors came from.  For example, my background is primarily German, with some Irish.

Have a great night!
