April 29th

Here's what we did today:
Math-We worked on identifying if a division estimate was too high, too low, or just right.

Word Study-We talked about first, second, and third person point of view.

Reading-Students read their independent books and we stopped at times to practice re-telling, predicting, and sharing our thoughts.

Writing-We worked on revising our poetry by focusing on the meanings and feelings of our poems.

Homework:
Math-Page 324 #10-36, evens only

Grammar-Finish up point of view paragraph if you need to

Writing-Revisions and Edits of orginal poems and poem analyses due Wednesday morning.

Social Studies-States and Capitals

April 28th

I was out for technology training this morning, but here's what the students worked on this morning:
Math: They worked on long division with 2 digit divisors.

Reading-Groups met to go over their book reviews.

Writing-Students worked on their poetry.  All drafts are completed and we will now spend time revising and editing.

This afternoon, we met in family groups.  The students had a chance to join with teachers and students who will be going to their new school and do some team building activities.  It was a lot of fun!

April 26th

Here's what we did today:
Math-Students took the quiz on adding and subtracting fraction with unlike denominators.  They have these with them today.

Word Study-Groups 1 and 2 took their test while Groups 3 and 4 did a buddy check.

Reading-We talked about the Super Six Strategies we use when reading and practiced using these strategies.

Writing-We completed a poem analysis together and students had time to work on their poetry analysis and collection.

Homework:
Reading-Groups Thursday

Writing-Drafts of the 10 poems students are using in their collection are due on Thursday.  These are just drafts and do not need to be revised yet. 

Social Studies-Keep practicing those states and capitals!  Two students have taken the test and done very well.  You may take the test on or before May 11th. 

*Tomorrow is Early Release at 1:40.
* The 5th grade garage sale is this Saturday.  Please bring any donations to school this week.

April 25th

I hope everyone had a great Easter and stayed safe and dry!  Here's what we did today:
Math: We went over adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators.  There will be a short quiz tomorrow.

Word Study-Groups 1 and 2 did a buddy check while Groups 3 and 4 met with me to go over the words they found on their search and then worked on their contracts.

Reading-The students met in groups.  We spent some time looking at book reviews on http://www.kirkusreviews.com/ because for groups on Thursday the students need to write a review of their group book.  They should not look up the review for their book.  We'll look at these on Thursday!

Writing-We talked about how to analyze the main idea, point of view, and feelings of a poem.  The students will be analyzing two poems for their poetry collection.  We also looked at some free verse poems.

We also switched for Science today, but they should still be working on learning their states and capitals.

Homework:
Math-Study for short (10 question) quiz.

Word Study-Groups 1/2 test tomorrow

Reading-See above.

April 21st

Here's what we did today:
Math-We learned how to subtract fractions with different denominators.  I will give a short quiz on adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators on Tuesday.  The kids are doing great with it!

Word Study-I met with Groups 1 and 2 to go over the words they found on their search while Groups 3 and 4 did their word search.

Reading-The students met in groups to discuss their favorite and least favorite characters.

Writing-Miss Bergin led a lesson on haikus.  Check the display in the hallway to see these!

Social Studies-We finished up Meet Me in St. Louis and worked on states and capitals.

Homework:
Math-WS 22.6, all--Please show your work

Word Study-Groups 1-2:Test Tuesday, Contract Wednesday---Groups 3-4: Test Wednesday, Contract Thursday

Reading-Groups meet on Monday--Make 5 good sticky notes.

Social Studies-Students may take the states and capitals test and optional extra credit (locations of the states) at any time.  The last day to take them is May 11th.

April 20th

Here's what we did today:
Math-We learned how to add fractions that have unlike denominators such as 1/4+2/3.

Word Study-I met with Groups 3 and 4 to complete their sorts while Groups 1 and 2 did their word search.

Reading-I met with some students today to practice retelling short passages of either fiction or non-fiction.  This will help to prepare them for the DRA test which will be given in the next few weeks to assess students' reading levels.

Writing-We wrote cinquain poems about spring.  We also visited the library where Mrs. Graef shared many poems with the students.

Social Studies-We worked on a packet to help with the states and capitals.  We also looked up some good websites to practice states and capitals.  A google search will pop up many great sites to use!

Homework:
Math-WS 22.5--odds

Reading-Groups meet tomorrow

Writing-Do something with poetry tonight . . . read some poems, write a poem by yourself or with a family member, look up poems and poetry activities online!

Social Studies-Keep working on the states and capitals!

April 18th

I hope everyone had a great weekend!  Here's what we did today:
Math-We reviewed for the decimals test on Chapter 26-27.

Word Study-I met with groups 3 and 4 to give them their new word lists.  Groups 1 and 2 prepared their words for the sort.

Reading-Students met in their literature circles.

Writing-We learned how to write a diamante poem.  Ask your child to show you one tonight!

Social Studies-Students took the Chapter 9 test.

Homework:
Math-Study Chapter 26-27, test tomorrow

Reading-Groups meet Thursday: Assignment-Choose your favorite and least favorite character in the book.  Write at least 3 reasons for your decision (for each).  Please use information from the text in your response.

Writing-Some students still need to revise their games.  These are due tomorrow.

Social Studies-Work on your states and capitals!

April 15th

Here's what we did today:
Math-We learned how to round decimals.

Word Study-I met with Groups 1 and 2 to give them their new words.  Groups 3 and 4 will get their words on Monday.

Writing-Students learned how to write a bio poem. 

Social Studies-We completed the study guide for Chapter 9 and also watched some of Meet Me in St. Louis.

Homework:
Math-WS 27.1--all

Reading-Groups on Monday

Social Studies-Test on Chapter 9 on Monday--Packet due Monday.

Writing-Some students need to finish revising their games.

**Thanks to everyone for participating in Jingles for Jacob.  As of right now the school has raised over $5,000!  It was a great show of character for the school and I know the family will appreciate the support.

April 14th

We had a great day to finish up MAP testing!  I'm so proud of the kids for all the hard work they put into the test.  I know they all tried their best!

Thank you to everyone for contributing to our pizza party.  The kids had a great time and I think the room will smell like Domino's for a few weeks :) 

Here's what else we did today:
Reading-The kids met in their literature circles.

Writing-We continued to share games.  Poetry will be our next focus.  Followed by fiction.

Social Studies-We learned more about Missouri's state government and also learned about our county and municipal governments.  Chapter 9 test will be on Monday.

Homework:
Reading-Groups meet on Monday.  Assignment: Draw a DETAILED picture of a scene from your book.  Make sure to include any important characters from the scene, the setting, and the action.  This should be in color.  On the back of the sheet please write a sentence or two explaining what part of the book your drawing is showing.

Social Studies-Test Monday/Packet due Monday

Writing-Writer's Notebook

*Tomorrow is Jingles for Jacob.  Kids should wear blue and bring money to help out Jacob, a Truman 1st grader, who is suffering from a brain tumor and receiving treatment in Houston.

April 13th

We had our first day of Math MAP testing and the kids did great!  One more day and we're all finished!

Here's what else we did:
We shared some more of our games in Writing.
We discussed more about the three branches of the federal government and began learning about our state government.

Reading-Groups meet tomorrow

Social Studies-Tentatively, a Chapter 9 test is scheduled for Monday with the study guide being due that day as well.  If we need more time, the test will be moved to Wednesday, the 20th.  I will know for sure after tomorrow's lesson.


*PIZZA PARTY--After figuring out the amount of pizza we will need, it seems that $2 per child will cover 2 slices per person.  Please send a drink to school with your child or they will be able to get water at school.  This will take the place of lunch so you do not need to send a lunch tomorrow.  Thanks for your help!  I know the kids are looking forward to celebrating after working so hard on the MAP.

April 12th

Here's what we did today:
We spent lots and lots of time reviewing Math from all of 4th grade!  We also found some time to share some of our games.

The only homework tonight is to review any Math concepts that students are struggling with, continue preparing for Literature Circles on Thursday and write in the Writer's Notebook.

**There were lots of important papers that went home today.  Please make sure to check your child's bag.  Among the papers is a form to allow your child's name to be put on a list later this school year listing the students who will be going to each elementary school next year.  You will also find a flyer regarding Jingles for Jacob, a student suffering from a brain tumor.  This event will be on Friday.

**Lastly, we are having a pizza party at lunch on Thursday to celebrate a job well-done on the MAP.  This will take the place of the normal lunch.  I will provide dessert, but please send a dollar to school with your child to help fund the pizzas.  Thank you!

April 11th

Here's what we did today:
Math-We learned how to compare and order decimals.

Reading-Students met in their reading groups today.

We spent a lot of time this morning doing math preparation for testing this week.

Social Studies-We learned about the national government including the Constitution and the 3 branches of government. 

Homework:
Math-WS 26.5, all

Reading-Groups meet on Thursday.  The written assignment is for the students to imagine themselves as a character in their book.  They need to write at least two paragraphs explaining how they would include themselves in the book and details such as who they would be friends with, what they would do, etc.

Social Studies-If students know of someone who has become a citizen (i.e.-was not born in the US), they should find out more information about the process that person went through to share with the class.

States and Capitals-While we have not really begun learning these in class, students should begin working on their states and capitals.

April 8th

Here's what we did today:
Math-We learned how to turn Mixed Numbers into Decimals and the other way around.  It is important to remember that a fraction must be changed to tenths, hundredths, and thousandths before it can be made into a decimal.

Writing-Students worked on publishing their games.  We will share these on Monday.

Social Studies-Students took the Chapter 6 test. 

Homework:
Math-WS 26.4, all

Reading-Groups meet on Monday-Be prepared with a diary entry from the point of view of one of your characters.

Writing-Published games due on Monday.

Social Studies-Some students need to have their test signed.

**We will test next Wednesday and Thursday in Math.  If doctor's appointments or other things must be made during school hours, please try to avoid testing days.  Thank you!

April 7th

Here's what we did today:
Math-We learned about equivalent decimals.

Reading-Students met in their literature circle groups.

Social Studies-We reviewed for the Chapter 6 test tomorrow by playing a review game.

Homework:
Math-WS 26.3

Reading-Groups meet Monday:Write a diary entry of at least two paragraphs from the point of view of one of the characters in the book.  In your entry make sure to tell what's been happening in your life (in the book) and how you're feeling about it.

Social Studies-Chapter 6 test tomorrow.  Packet due tomorrow.  Optional extra credit due tomorrow.  Make sure to study!  Chapter 6 is a long chapter and we covered a lot of information.

**We finished Communication Arts testing today!  We will test in Math next Wednesday and Thursday. 
**Wear a shirt tomorrow from a team you're on or an activity you're involved in.

April 6th

We began MAP testing today in Communication Arts today and I'm so proud of all the kids!  They worked hard the entire time and I could tell they were really taking their time and doing their best!  We will finish up with Communication Arts tomorrow.

We also learned about decimals to the thousandths place and learned about Missouri in the late 1800s and early 1900s with the railroads, new industry, and the World's Fair.  We'll review Chapter 6 in SS tomorrow and test on Friday.

Reading-Groups meet tomorrow

Social Studies-Keep working on packet and study

Again, make sure to get lots of sleep and eat a good breakfast!

April 5th

Here's what we did today:
Math-We talked a little more about mathematical probability and also used tree diagrams in order to find how many combinations are possible.

Reading-We had some centers to review concepts such as synonyms, antonyms and facts and opinions.

This afternoon, we wrote a letter to the author of Dewey to practice good letter writing.

Homework:
Math-WS 23.5, all

Reading-Groups on Thursday

April 4th

Here's what we did today:
Math-We learned how to explain probability as a fraction. We also talked about transformations and congurent vs. similar.

Reading-Students met in their new literature circle groups.

Writing-We spent a little time working on our game instructions.

Social Studies-We began watching Meet Me in St. Louis to learn about the 1904 World's Fair.  The Chapter 6 test is on Friday.

Homework:
Math-WS 23.3

Reading-Groups meet on Thursday.

We start testing on Wednesday in Communication Arts.  We will test Wednesday and Thursday of this week.  Thanks for helping your child to get lots of rest, drink lots of water and eat good, healthy breakfasts!

April 1st

Happy April Fool's Day!  The kids were quite surprised this morning to find their desks turned backwards and also to see that their morning work was to write the numbers from 1-1,000,000 with all the even numbers in pencil and all the odd numbers in pen.  Needless to say, we did not complete this task :) 

Here's what we did today:
Math-The students worked on some very difficult word problems in groups and then taught the class how they got to their answer.  We discussed the importance of underlining important words and using a diagram to help understand the question.  We also talked about predicting the outcomes of experiments using the words likely, unlikely, certain, impossible, or equally likely.

Reading-We went over the poetry packet together and students had time to begin preparing for their groups on Monday.

Social Studies-We watched a BrainPop on the Civil War while working on their chosen project.

Homework:
Math-WS 23.2, all

Reading-Groups on Monday, Fiction packet due Tuesday.  Students need to complete the packet independently as it is MAP prep.

Social Studies-Some students need to finish their project.  Chapter 6 test will be next Friday.
