Happy Holidays!

I just wanted to wish everyone happy holidays and a nice, relaxing break!  We had a great day today at the Reindeer Relay and the Party!  I have just a couple reminders for the break:

1) Read as much as possible.
2) Write as much as possible-I'd still like to see three entries a week so we don't get out of the habit.
3) Practice "big" multiplication problems.  We will be starting long division shortly after break so it will be really important to have the multiplication under control.
4) Most importantly, have fun!  Enjoy your time with family and friends!

Thanks to everyone who came to help out at the party today and for all you do for your children!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

December 15th

Here's what we did today:
Math-We learned how to multiply with money.  It is important to pay attention to whether the problem needs a decimal point or not.  If one of the factors has a decimal point, then the answer must have a decimal point.  If there is only a dollar sign in the factors, but no decimal point, then the answer does not need a decimal point.  Start counting for commas with the number to the left of the decimal point (if there is one).  And always remember a dollar sign.

Word Study-We went over more prepositional phrases and discussed that a preposition must start the prepositional phrase, there must be a noun or pronoun in the phrase and the sentence must still be a complete sentence even if the prepositional phrase is taken out.

Reading-Students worked on reading a passage about chocolate and practicing using RAP (Restate, Answer, Prove) to answer the questions about the passage.  They also met in Reading groups.

Writing-We learned how to correctly address a letter and finished up the persuasive letters.

Homework:

Math-WS 12.4, odds and MR---Use the block paper to rewrite the multiplication problems.

Reading-Groups will meet TOMORROW for the last time before break.

Writing-Finish addressing your envelope if you need to.  If you are sending it through the mail, please put a stamp on the envelope.

Science-Study Guide and study for the test.

I hope to see many of you at the concert tonight.  Please be safe driving if the roads are slick at that time!

December 13th

I hope everyone had a nice weekend and stayed warm!

Here's what we did today:
Math-We learned two ways of doing 2 by 2 digit multiplication: regrouping and partial products.  On their homework tonight, the students will practice both ways.

Word Study-We are covering prepositions again to ensure understanding.  We discussed that a preposition must have an object that follows it (noun or pronoun) and the sentence must still be a sentence even if the prepositional phrase is taken out.

Reading-In pairs, the students explored an expository text and created a text feature that wasn't in the book already, such as a graph, table or diagram.  They also met in their Reading Groups.

Writing-We edited the persuasive letters again and will begin publishing tomorrow.

Homework:
Math-WS 12.1-From #1-17, the odds need to be completed by regrouping and the evens by partial products.  The rest can be completed as stated on the sheet.  The Chapter 12 test will be Friday.

Reading-Read 100 minutes this week-Groups meet Wednesday

Writing-Writer's Notebook--finish editing if you need to

Science-WS is due tomorrow.

Have a great night!

December 10th

Here's what we did today:
Math-Students took the Chapter 11 test.  They saw their grade, but will get the tests back on Monday after I enter the scores in the gradebook.

Reading-Students took a short assessment on text features and did very well!  I'm hoping to see their knowledge of text features carry over into all non-fiction books and articles, including the Social Studies book.  They also met in their Reading groups.

Writing-We worked on editing the persuasive letters.  We will finish editing on Monday and will start publishing.  I've asked them to bring in an envelope to mail their letter in.  If they are sending it to someone outside of school or home, please put a stamp on the envelope.  We will address and add a return address to these envelopes in school so please don't address them; however, some students may need help going online to find a correct address for the recipient of their letter.

Homework:
Reading-Prepare for groups on Monday.

Writing-Don't forget about your Writer's Notebook.

I look forward to seeing most of you at the show on Sunday!  Have a great weekend!

Word Study-Groups 1 and 2 took their test today while Groups 3 and 4 did a buddy check.

Reading-Reading groups met today.  We also looked through some different expository texts and the kids are working on finding different text features in the book.

We also held another Spelling Bee to get another representative from our class and that is . . . Tate!  We also held a Bee to get a 3rd winner in case Megan or Tate are not here during the 4th grade bee next Wednesday and that is . . . Hope!

Homework:
Math-WS 11.5, all problems

Here's what we did today:

Reading-We took the Reading Tungsten today.

Word Study-Groups 1-2 did a buddy check and Groups 3-4 worked on their contract.

Writing-We spent a lot of time revising our letters today and focused on two things: transitions an playing "devil's advocate".  We are really working hard on anticipating how our readers will respond to our persuasive arguments and trying to counteract them!

We also began the Math Tungsten today.

Homework:
Math-WS 11.4, all problems

Reading-Groups meet tomorrow.

Writing-Spend at least ten minutes revising.  If you are having trouble revising a certain part, put a star by it to remind yourself to ask for help during your group or partner revision tomorrow.

December 6th

I hope everyone had a nice weekend!  Here's what we did today:
Math-We learned how to multiply 2 by 2 digit numbers where one factor is a multiple of 10.  An example is 43x50 or 68x20.  I also met with some students who have almost grasped the concept of the distributive property.

Reading-We had a fishbowl as one of the reading groups modeled their Literature Circle.  Thank you to Lauren, Ben and Anna for modeling some great questioning and sharing of thoughts on their book!  Most other groups met today as well.  All groups will meet on Wednesday.

Word Study-Groups 3 and 4 met with me to do their word sort while Groups 1 and 2 worked on their contracts.  Test for Groups 1 and 2 is Wednesday and for Groups 3 and 4 is Thursday.  Contracts are due the day after the test.

Writing-We learned some ways to make our persuasive letter leads grab the reader's attention.  We talked about asking a question, using an arresting sentence, an astonishing fact, dialogue, or setting the mood.

We also had a class Spelling Bee today to determine two class spellers to participate in a 4th grade spelling bee next Wednesday, the 15th.  The 4th grade winners will go on to the school spelling bee in January.  Our first class winner is Megan W. and we will hold a second bee this Wednesday to get a second class winner.  Congratulations Megan!
