Tesselations

Recently, we studied tesselations and learned that they are created when a shape is repeated over and over again with no gaps or overlaps. We then created our own. Here are the steps we followed if you would like to give it a try:
1. Cut out a perfect square. (We used a 4x4 square, but any will work.)
2. Draw some kind of line (must be made up of only straight edges) from the top of the square to the bottom and from the left to the right.
3. Label each square that you have just drawn accordingly with NE, NW, SE, and SW.
4. Cut out along the lines so that you have 4 figures.
5. Lay the squares on a surface as they were before you cut them out.
6. Swap the NE with the SW and the NW with the SE.
7. Tape the figure together so that none of the edges overlap.
8. Place your figure on the corner of a piece of paper, trace around it, and repeat. Each figure should fit perfectly into the one next to it.
9. Finally, choose two colors for your design and you have created a beautiful tesselation!

Earth Day Paragraphs

Everyone had great ideas on how they could help the Earth. Hopefully we can practice those ideas all year long! Here are three of our paragraphs on ways to help the Earth.

Kayla

Earth Day is a national holiday that everybody should participate in. I love being "green". I think being green means to do what you think helping clean the Earth is. For example, every day I walk to and from my school. That way, the gas from our car doesn't pollute the air. Do you realize that 261 days, or the entire school year, I walk? That's just my way of being "green". Maybe you can ask your mom or dad about how you can participate in my favorite holiday, Earth Day!

Jessie

A thirsty world is what our world is. Over half of all water wasted is used in the bathroom. When you wake up in the US you don't have to ask "Is there water?" Save water by brushing your teeth with no water running. Help the Earth!

Michael B.

To save energy for Earth Day I will turn off the water while I brush my teeth because that is one of the biggest threats to the world. It's one of the biggest threats because noone does it. Also, because it wastes gallons of water. And maybe because if everyone did, our Earth would probably be saved. That is why I'll turn off the water while I brush my teeth.
